Australis Barramundi – The Sustainable Sea Bass™

Australis is the world's largest barramundi producer and operates some of the most innovative and environmentally friendly fish farms in the world.  We spearheaded the introduction of Barramundi, the Sustainable Sea Bass™ in North America and have proudly seen it grow from a favorite in Australia to an international culinary trend. We sell our barramundi under The Better Fish® brand; A Better Fish, A Better World, A Better You!

A history of Smart Aquaculture™...

In 1982, Josh Goldman was living in a student-built solar greenhouse and pioneered integrated production systems that were at the forefront of the emerging field of sustainable aquaculture. Armed with a passion for the environment and a head for science and technology, Josh spent 20 years testing over 50 different species. He searched the globe to find the 'Next Big Fish' that would deliver great flavor and culinary versatility with real health and sustainability benefits. Josh used a specific set of criteria to evaluate each species’ ability to thrive in an aquaculture environment.  Time and again each species failed to meet his criteria. Then, in 2000 Josh met Stewart Graham, an Australian entrepreneur who introduced him to barramundi. Finally, Josh met his match. This Southeast Asian fish met all of his criteria; in fact, its natural habitat is almost exactly that of a fish farm.

The world's only vertically-integrated barramundi producer

Today, Australis is the world's largest and only vertically-integrated barramundi producer. Headquartered in Massachusetts, we operate some of the most innovative and environmentally-friendly fish farms with locations in the U.S. and Central Vietnam. Our diversified base gives us the ability to supply saltwater farmed, fresh and frozen barramundi of exceptional quality on a year-round basis.

Starting with our revolutionary, indoor aquaculture system in Massachusetts, Australis’ innovative farming practices address all of the major environmental challenges facing fish farming. Such innovations are helping the aquaculture industry reach its potential as a sustainable alternative to diminishing wild fisheries, and have propelled Australis to become a recognized leader in the sustainable aquaculture movement.
