Locally raised Barramundi is quickly becoming a superstar in the fish family. Recently touted by Dr. Oz as one of the top 5 Superfoods, Barramundi is "..full of heart- and brain-healthy omega-3s.."
While the quality of farmed fish has come into suspect status, a local company, Australis Aquaculture is making strides in turning those tides. The flagship product of Australis is Barramundi. This mild white fish is nurtured to be free of "hormones, antibiotics, mercury and other contaminates". The Seafood Choices Alliance named Australis it's "Seafood Champion" for 2009.
Using sustainable practices, Australis has pioneered procedures for aqua farming to meet the challenges faced by the industry. The company started farming Barramundi in an indoor facility locally in Turnersfalls, MA. To meet the growing international demand for this superfsh they have now set up farms in Barramundi's native waters of southeast Asia.
In time for lent, Big Y is featuring Barramundi at $5.99 per 12. oz. bag. They have also featured it in this months "Living Well Eating Smart" Magazine. Big Y's Carrie Taylor, RD, LDN, notes this fish ideal for getting your Omega-3's, "Best of all, each 3-ounce serving contains 500 milligrams omega-3s for only 1½ grams fat (compared to 540 milligrams omega-3s and 5 grams fat found in salmon)." The magazine also features a recipe for Barramundi with tomato and wine sauce.
